Scalable Chatter
Resize the chatter to fit the form. Collapse it when you don't need it. Each form remembers its own setting.
Odoo 16 $5 USD Per-Form MemoryThe Chatter Always Took Too Much Room
Standard Odoo gives you exactly one chatter width — and it's the same on every form. Hide it, and it's hidden everywhere. Show it, and your invoice lines fight for space.
Without this module
One fixed chatter width. Same panel size on the journal you log into 50× a day and the lead you open once a week. Hidden chatter? Hidden on every form. No middle ground.
With this module
Drag the chatter narrow on accounting, wide on CRM, hidden on inventory transfers. Each form remembers its own width. Each user has their own preferences. Alt+C toggles instantly.
Four Things It Does Well
Lightweight, focused, no configuration.
A vertical handle between the form and chatter. Drag left or right to set the chatter to whatever width fits this form.
A small chevron button collapses the chatter completely so the form gets full width. Click again to bring it back.
Width and collapsed state are remembered for every form, separately for each user. Different settings on every form, no setup.
A keyboard shortcut toggles chatter visibility on whatever form is currently open. Hands stay on the keyboard.
A user-level default in Preferences picks the starting state for forms you haven't customised yet.
Real-World Scenarios
A bookkeeper editing 80 journal lines wants every pixel for the line columns. Collapse the chatter once on this form — it stays collapsed forever.
A salesperson reviewing client comms wants the chatter wider — that's where the email thread, internal notes, and activity log live. Drag once, remembered.
Stock moves, transfers, and picking lists are wide tables. On a small screen the default chatter eats half the form. Collapse it on these forms, full-width back.
When you arrow-up/arrow-down through records, the chatter state stays consistent. Alt+C toggles the panel between full-form and chatter-visible without losing your place.
How It Works
Every form view with a chatter automatically gets a resize handle and a collapse button. No configuration, no tagging individual models.
Drag the handle to set the width. Click the button to collapse. Hit Alt+C to toggle. Use whichever way fits your flow at the moment.
Next time you open the same form, the chatter is right where you left it. Different forms keep their own settings. Different users keep their own preferences.
Installation
No Python dependencies, no database migration, no configuration.
Step 1
Install from the Apps menuApps menu → remove the Apps filter → search "Scalable Chatter" → Install.
Step 2
That's itEvery form view immediately picks up the resize handle and toggle button. Optional: set a default collapsed state in your user Preferences.
Works With Every Form View
Anything in Odoo with a chatter — which is essentially every business form.
Forms without a chatter are unaffected.
What This Module Doesn't Do
Honest scope. Here's what's out of reach.
Width preferences are stored in the browser, so they live per machine. Open the same record on a different computer and you'll start from your default.
The chatter stays where Odoo puts it (right side of the form). This module changes width and visibility — not position.
On screens narrower than a tablet, the resize handle and toggle are hidden — Odoo's mobile chatter layout takes over. Desktop / tablet only.
If your browser wipes site data between sessions (kiosk / incognito), every login starts from your default. By design, but worth knowing.
No Server Load, No DB Bloat
Width and collapsed state live in your browser, not on the server. Opening a record costs zero extra requests — the panel snaps to your saved width before the form even finishes painting. Zero impact on Odoo's chatter performance.
FAQ
No — the module layers on top of Odoo's standard form rendering without replacing it. Other UI modules and customisations keep working.
Yes. Width settings live in your browser; the global default lives on your user record. Both survive Odoo upgrades and module reinstalls.
No. Alt+C isn't bound by default in any major browser, and the module's handler only fires while a form with a chatter is on screen.
Per-form widths are local to each browser. The user-level default does follow you across devices — set it once in Preferences and every new browser starts from there.
None. Install the module and every form gets the controls. Each user shapes the experience to their own workflow without bothering an admin.
