Why Dibon SMS Is More Cost Effective

On Odoo's official IAP SMS pricing table, Kenya (+254) is listed at 0.4093 USD per SMS, while Dibon SMS is priced at 1 KES per SMS, making Dibon SMS much cheaper for businesses sending SMS in Kenya.

If your business sends alerts, payment reminders, delivery updates, or campaign messages regularly, the savings add up quickly while you keep the workflow fully inside Odoo.

1. Overview

The Dibon SMS module enables your Odoo system to send SMS messages through the Tiara SMS Gateway. It supports transactional messages, notifications, and bulk SMS campaigns directly from Odoo.

2. Prerequisites

Before using the module, ensure you have:

  • A valid Sender ID (Alphanumeric Sender Name) approved by Safaricom
  • An active API Key from Dibon SMS Gateway
  • Access to your Odoo server (with rights to install modules)

3. Getting a Sender ID

To send SMS, you must first register a Sender ID.

Option 1: Directly via Safaricom

  • Apply for a Sender ID through Safaricom
  • Wait for approval before proceeding

Option 2: Via Dibon

  • Request assistance through: info@dibon.co.ke
  • Dibon will facilitate the Sender ID application and approval

4. Installing the Dibon SMS Module

  1. Download the Dibon SMS module.
  2. Copy the module into your Odoo addons directory.
  3. Use your custom addons path such as /odoo/custom/addons/.
  4. Restart your Odoo server.
  5. Go to Apps → Update App List.
  6. Search for Dibon SMS.
  7. Click Install.

5. Configuration

After installation:

  1. Navigate to Settings → SMS Settings (Dibon SMS).
  2. Enter the required details.
  • API Endpoint: http://sms.dibon.co.ke:8989/api/messaging/sendsms
  • API Key: Provided by Dibon
  • Sender ID: Approved by Safaricom

6. Authentication Setup

In the SMS module settings:

  1. Click Request Authentication Token.
  2. The system sends a request to the Dibon Gateway.
  3. It retrieves and stores the authentication token.
  4. Save the settings.

7. Sending SMS

Single SMS

  1. Go to any supported model, such as Contacts or Sales Orders.
  2. Click Send SMS.
  3. Enter the message.
  4. Send.

Bulk SMS

  1. Navigate to SMS → Campaigns.
  2. Create a new campaign.
  3. Select recipients.
  4. Compose the message.
  5. Send the campaign.

8. Delivery Reports (Optional)

  • Configure a callback URL in your system if needed.
  • The gateway will send delivery status updates automatically.

9. Troubleshooting

  • Invalid API Key: Confirm the key from Dibon.
  • Sender ID rejected: Ensure Safaricom approval is complete.
  • Messages not sending: Check internet connectivity, endpoint URL, and token authentication status.
