Make every financial report line self-explanatory
Write what each line of your financial report actually measures, in your own words. When anyone audits or reviews a number, the explanation is right there — no need to chase down the consultant who originally set up the report.
The problem
Every time someone reviews a financial report — an auditor, a new analyst, the CFO preparing a board meeting — the same question comes back: "what does this line actually mean?" The label is short, the number is just a number, and the meaning lives somewhere else: a spreadsheet, a wiki, or in the consultant's head.
When the consultant moves on or the spreadsheet gets out of date, the knowledge walks out the door. Each new audit, each onboarding, each handover starts the same investigation again.
Before & after
Same line of the same report — before and after writing an explanation.
↳ The reviewer sees the number, but not what business indicator the line is actually measuring.
↳ The meaning is read first; the numbers below confirm it.
What you get
Four small changes that add up to a self-documenting report.
Write the meaning once
From the standard report configuration, write the business meaning of each line in your own words — the way you would explain it to a colleague. It is saved alongside the report, not in a separate document.
Read it while reviewing
When someone opens the detail of a specific line — typically to audit a number or understand how it was built — your explanation is the first thing they see, before the underlying numbers and formulas.
Doesn't change the daily view
Day-to-day users who just open the report and read the numbers see exactly what they saw before. The explanation only appears for people who explicitly open the detail of a line.
Available in every language
Each language enabled in your system can carry its own version of the explanation, so a French team and an English team each read the meaning in their own words — no manual translation file to maintain.
How it works
Three steps after install.
From the standard financial reports configuration in Accounting, pick a report and open any of its lines.
Fill in the new explanation field with the business meaning of the line — in plain words, as if speaking to a colleague.
Anyone opening the detail of a line in the report — to audit it or understand how it was built — sees your explanation as the first row.
Who it is for
Anyone who configures, audits or hands over financial reports.
Document why each line of the report is set up the way it is — so the knowledge stays with the report, not in a single person's head.
Understand what each line is meant to measure at a glance, without having to ask the consultant who originally built the report.
Onboard new analysts faster — the meaning of every line lives next to the report itself, not in a separate document that goes stale.
