Never Confirm An Out-of-Stock Order Again
Restrict Out of Stock Product hard-blocks sales orders and warehouse transfers that exceed available stock, flags shortages the moment a product is added, and lets managers override with a mandatory reason and a full audit trail.
Salespeople confirm quotations and warehouses validate transfers without any real check against on-hand stock. Odoo's native warning is easy to click past, so overselling happens exactly when speed matters most — leaving negative inventory, broken promises, and manual clean-up for the warehouse team to untangle after the fact.
Restrict Out of Stock Product replaces the ignorable warning with true enforcement. Shortage and low-stock lines are flagged red and orange the moment they are added, sales order confirmation and warehouse transfers are hard-blocked, and a role-restricted manager can approve a justified exception that is written to a permanent audit log.
Everything you need to stop overselling
Every capability below is implemented in the module.
Hard Stock Enforcement
Blocks sales order confirmation outright when any line exceeds available quantity, replacing Odoo's ignorable warning with a real stop.
Red-Line Shortage Flagging
Order lines are colored red for out-of-stock and orange for low-stock the moment a product is added, so problems surface before confirmation, not after.
Configurable Validation Method
Choose whether availability is checked against on-hand quantity, free-to-use quantity, or forecasted quantity to match how your business actually operates.
Conservative, Balanced & Permissive Presets
Ship with ready-made validation presets so administrators get sensible behavior instantly, with full manual control still available.
Per-Product Thresholds & Messages
Set a custom low-stock threshold, a tailored out-of-stock message, and an exemption flag for any individual product.
Governed Manager Override
A dedicated Stock Restriction Override Manager role can approve an exception with a mandatory written justification, right from the order.
Full Audit Trail
Every override is recorded in a permanent log with the user, timestamp, reason, and a snapshot of the shortage lines it applied to.
Warehouse Transfer Protection
Extends the same enforcement to internal and outgoing transfers, blocking any picking that would push on-hand stock negative.
Customer-Facing Availability Status
Shows a clear In Stock, Limited Availability, or On Backorder indicator on the quotation so customers see the true position before committing.
How it works
Configure
Pick a preset or set the validation method, threshold, and block behavior in Sales Settings.
Flag
Order lines flag red or orange automatically as products are added to a quotation.
Block
Confirmation and warehouse transfers are hard-blocked whenever a shortage remains unresolved.
Override & Audit
An authorized manager can approve a justified exception, permanently logged for later review.
See it in action
See hard enforcement, configuration, and the audit trail in the actual Odoo interface.
A mixed quotation shows one out-of-stock line in red, one low-stock line in orange, and one in-stock line in green — the exact rule that fired is visible on every row.
Once a manager approves an override, the order carries a clear override-applied notice and confirms normally.
Set a per-product low-stock threshold, a custom out-of-stock message, and an exemption flag directly on the product form.
Choose the preset, validation method, threshold, and block behavior from a dedicated Stock Restriction section in Sales settings.
Every override is recorded in a dedicated audit log, listing the order, the approving user, and the date.
Each log entry keeps the full justification and a snapshot of the shortage lines it covered.
Frequently asked
Does this block sales orders, or just show a warning?
By default it hard-blocks confirmation of any sales order with an out-of-stock line. The block-on-confirm behavior is configurable, and the Permissive preset switches to flagging only.
Can a manager still process an urgent sale when stock is short?
Yes. A user in the Stock Restriction Override Manager role can approve the order with a mandatory written justification, which is permanently recorded in the audit log.
Which stock quantity does the module check?
You choose: on-hand quantity, free-to-use quantity (on-hand minus reservations), or forecasted quantity. Conservative, Balanced, and Permissive presets set sensible defaults for each.
Does it also protect warehouse transfers, or only sales orders?
Both. Internal and outgoing transfers that would push on-hand stock negative are blocked the same way sales order confirmation is, using one consistent rule set.
