Product costs you can trust
Keep every product cost aligned with its Bill of Materials automatically — with staleness warnings, a full audit trail, cost locking, per-line cost drivers, and a batch refresh wizard.
In native Odoo, recomputing a product's cost from its Bill of Materials is a manual, on-demand click. Component prices, quantities, and routing costs drift and nobody notices — until margins, sale-price recommendations, and inventory valuation are already wrong.
Product cost recomputes automatically whenever the Bill of Materials changes, rolled up across every sub-assembly level. A staleness warning flags any product whose cost may no longer be trustworthy, and every automatic change is logged for you to verify.
Everything BoM costing needs
Every capability below is implemented in the module.
Automatic Cost Update
Product cost recomputes automatically whenever a Bill of Materials or its lines change — auto-update can be toggled on or off in settings.
Multi-Level Roll-Up
Costs aggregate recursively from nested sub-assemblies up to the finished product, using Odoo's own costing engine.
Cost Staleness Warning
A visible warning flags any product whose cost drifted from its BoM-derived value or was last refreshed beyond a configurable day threshold.
Full Audit Trail
Every cost change is logged with old value, new value, trigger, timestamp and user, so an automatic update is never a silent, unverifiable event.
Manual Cost Lock
Lock a product's cost during a supply disruption or special pricing case. Locked products are never overwritten by an automatic update.
Per-Line Cost Drivers
Each Bill of Materials line shows its own cost and a cost-share progress bar, so the components driving the total are obvious at a glance.
Batch Cost-Update Wizard
Refresh cost for many selected products in one action, with a per-product preview of the delta before you commit. Locked products are skipped automatically.
Cost Per Unit & Batch
The Bill of Materials shows both the batch cost and the cost per unit produced, so accountants get the figure they actually need for pricing.
Configurable Threshold
Set the cost staleness threshold, in days, from Manufacturing settings to match how often your catalog's costs realistically need review.
How it works
Configure
Turn on auto-update and set the staleness threshold in Manufacturing settings.
Build the BoM
Add components, sub-assemblies, and operations as usual on the Bill of Materials.
Cost Updates Itself
The product cost recomputes automatically and a log entry records the change.
Review & Refresh
Watch for staleness warnings, and batch-refresh a whole catalog after a price update.
See it in action
Real screens from the module, captured on Odoo 17.
BoM Cost / Unit, Cost Variance, and a stale-cost warning banner with "Update now" / "Update Cost from BoM" actions right on the product form.
With Lock Cost enabled, the staleness warning still shows, but the update actions are correctly hidden — the manual cost always wins.
A multi-level BoM with a nested sub-assembly: Cost/Unit, batch cost, and per-line Line Cost with Cost Share progress bars so the biggest drivers stand out.
Every cost change lands in the BoM Cost Updates log — manual, automatic (BoM change), and batch updates are all recorded and filterable.
Each log entry captures the old and new cost, the delta, the trigger, and a note — a fully explainable, auditable change record.
The batch update wizard previews the cost delta for every selected product before committing — the locked product's row is shown with its checkbox disabled.
Manufacturing settings' "Product Costing from BoM" block: the auto-update toggle and the configurable Cost Staleness Threshold, in days.
Frequently asked
Does this work with multi-level Bills of Materials?
Yes. Cost rolls up recursively through nested sub-assemblies, so a finished product's cost reflects every layer of its Bill of Materials, not just its direct components.
What happens if I manually lock a product's cost?
A locked product keeps its manually set cost. Automatic updates and the batch wizard both skip locked products, so the manual value always takes precedence.
How do I know a product's cost is out of date?
A staleness warning appears on the product form whenever the current cost differs from the BoM-derived cost or was last refreshed beyond the threshold configured in Manufacturing settings.
Can I refresh costs for many products at once?
Yes. The batch cost-update wizard lets you select multiple products, preview the cost delta for each one, and commit them all in a single action.
