Odoo Model Watchdog
Monitor any Odoo model health using Python expressions
Odoo Model Watchdog lets you define Python-based health checks for any Odoo model. Each monitor evaluates up to three expressions - Danger, Warning, and Healthy - and automatically tracks the status over time. When the status changes, a configured server action is triggered. A full change history log is kept for every monitor.
Key features:
- Python expressions - use
count(),search(),datetime,timedeltaand more in your conditions. - Priority evaluation - Danger is checked first, then Warning, then Healthy. The first expression that returns
Truewins. - Server action triggers - attach an ir.actions.server to each status level; it fires only when the status changes to that level.
- Full change history - every status transition is recorded with timestamp, model, previous and current status, and a note.
- Hourly cron job - all active monitors are evaluated automatically. Each monitor runs in isolation; one failure never blocks the rest.
- Manual Check Now button - run a health check instantly from the form view and see a color-coded notification with the result.
- Kanban dashboard - monitors are grouped by status with color-coded cards for a quick visual overview.
- Error handling - if an expression raises an exception, the status is set to Error and the exception message is saved in the log.
- Systray status dots - colored dots for every active monitor are shown in the top Odoo navigation bar. Hover over a dot to see the monitor name and current status. Auto-refreshed every minute. Visible only to users with the Watchdog User group.
Kanban view - monitors grouped by status with color-coded cards.
Monitor form - define Python expressions for each status level.
Systray indicator - colored dots in the top navigation bar show all monitor statuses at a glance. Hover for name and status.
Monitor form - attach server actions.
Status change log - full history of all status transitions with timestamps and notes.
Expression context variables
The following variables are available inside every Python expression:
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
env |
Odoo environment with superuser access |
user |
Current user running the check (res.users record) |
model |
Empty recordset of the monitored model; use model._name, model.search(), etc. |
count(domain) |
Shorthand for model.search_count(domain). Domain is optional. |
search(domain, limit) |
Shorthand for model.search(domain, limit=limit) |
datetime |
Python datetime module |
date |
Python datetime.date class |
timedelta |
Python datetime.timedelta class |
Expression examples
Danger - more than 50 draft orders older than 7 days:
count([('state', '=', 'draft'), ('create_date', '<', (datetime.now() - timedelta(days=7)).strftime('%Y-%m-%d'))]) > 50
Warning - any records in error state:
count([('state', '=', 'error')]) > 0
Healthy - all recent invoices are confirmed (leave Healthy empty to use as default fallback):
count([('state', '=', 'posted'), ('invoice_date', '>=', (date.today() - timedelta(days=30)).strftime('%Y-%m-%d'))]) == count()
Access rights
The module ships with a dedicated security group. Access is restricted to users explicitly assigned to the Watchdog User group; ordinary internal users have no access by default.
| Group | Technical ID | Monitors | Logs | Menu & Systray |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watchdog User | odoo_model_watchdog.group_watchdog_user |
Read only | Read only | Visible |
| Technical / Administrator | base.group_system |
Full access | Full access | Visible |
Note: Administrator users (base.group_system) are automatically
included in the Watchdog User group via Odoo's implied_ids mechanism,
so no manual assignment is required for admins.
To assign the Watchdog User group go to
Settings → Users & Companies → Users, open the user form,
and enable Watchdog User under the Technical category.
Getting started
- Install the module and navigate to Odoo Model Watchdog → Monitors.
- Create a new monitor and select the Odoo model to watch (e.g. Sale Order).
- Write Python expressions for Danger and/or Warning conditions. Leave Healthy empty to use it as the default fallback.
- Optionally attach a Server Action (model must be set to Odoo Model Watchdog) to each status level for notifications, emails, or automated tasks.
- Click Check Now to verify the expressions and see the immediate result.
- The hourly cron job will take care of periodic evaluation automatically.
