Tax Depreciation & Dual-Book Assets

Run a second, purely statistical tax depreciation schedule alongside every asset's book schedule - reconcile book vs. tax in one click, and let Odoo draft your deferred tax entry. Your general ledger never sees a single tax-only line.

Problem: Odoo Only Tracks One Depreciation Schedule Per Asset

Financial reporting depreciation and tax depreciation almost never follow the same method or duration - tax law often mandates accelerated methods, half-year conventions, or fixed statutory lives that have nothing to do with the useful life used for the books. Standard Odoo's Assets app only has room for one.

  • Accountants track the tax schedule in a separate spreadsheet, disconnected from the actual asset register
  • No visibility into which assets are creating taxable vs. deductible temporary differences
  • Computing the deferred tax asset/liability for IAS 12 / ASC 740 provisioning means manually re-deriving every asset's numbers each period
  • Any attempt to "force" the tax schedule into the book asset risks polluting the general ledger with entries that were never meant to post
  • Multi-company groups have no consolidated view of book-to-tax differences across entities

Solution: A Parallel Tax Board That Never Touches the GL

Give any asset its own Tax Profile - method, duration, period, declining factor, salvage value, half-year convention - right next to its book profile. Click Compute Tax Depreciation and the module builds a purely statistical schedule stored on the asset itself. Nothing is ever posted to the general ledger. A dedicated Book-to-Tax Reconciliation report shows cost, book and tax accumulated depreciation, net book value, tax base and the resulting temporary difference for every asset - and a Deferred Tax wizard turns that difference into a draft journal entry your accountant reviews before posting.

  Key Features
  •   Independent Tax Profile - method, duration, period, declining factor, salvage value and half-year convention, set per asset alongside the book profile
  •   Zero GL Impact - tax depreciation lines are purely statistical; they are never linked to, nor create, any journal entry
  •   Four Tax Methods - Straight Line, Declining, Declining then Straight Line, or fully Manual lines for jurisdictions with fixed statutory schedules
  •   Book-to-Tax Reconciliation Report - list & pivot views with cost, accumulated book/tax depreciation, net book value, tax base and temporary difference, with free Excel export
  •   Deferred Tax Wizard - computes DTA/DTL from temporary differences at a configured rate and generates a draft-only journal entry for accountant review, launched right from the Assets list
  •   Tax Depreciation Pools - group related assets (e.g. a machinery class) and see rolled-up cost, book value, tax base and temporary difference totals
  •   Multi-Company & Multi-Currency - every computation follows each asset's own company and currency
  •   Native Integration - adds a "Tax Depreciation" page directly on the standard Asset form; no separate app or menu maze
  •   Built on Odoo Accounting - depends only on the standard Enterprise Assets app

  The Module Cycle
1

Set the Tax Profile

Open the asset's Tax Depreciation page and choose a method, duration and rate

2

Compute the Tax Board

One click builds the statistical schedule; the book asset and GL are untouched

3

Reconcile Book vs. Tax

The reconciliation report shows every asset's temporary difference and its nature

4

Compute Deferred Tax

Select assets, set the tax rate, and preview the DTA/DTL split instantly

5

Review & Post

A balanced draft entry is generated - your accountant reviews it before it ever posts

How It Works - Step by Step

Step 1 - Configure the Tax Profile and Compute the Board

Open any asset and go to its new Tax Depreciation page. Turn on Compute Tax Depreciation, pick a method - Straight Line, Declining, Declining then Straight Line, or Manual - set the duration, rate and optional half-year convention, then click Compute Tax Depreciation. The Book-to-Tax Reconciliation panel updates immediately, and the schedule appears as a line-by-line board underneath.

Tip: Group related assets into a Tax Depreciation Pool for rolled-up reporting - see the CNC Machining Center below, assigned to the "Manufacturing Equipment Pool".
Asset Tax Depreciation tab - Declining method, taxable temporary difference

CNC Machining Center - Declining tax method vs. Straight Line book method produces a $50,760 taxable difference

Asset Tax Depreciation tab - Half-year convention, deductible temporary difference

Delivery Van Fleet - Half-Year Convention enabled, producing a deductible (DTA) difference instead

Step 2 - Review the Book-to-Tax Reconciliation

Open Accounting -> Assets and Revenues -> Book-to-Tax Reconciliation for a company-wide list of every tax-enabled asset: cost, accumulated book and tax depreciation, net book value, tax base, and the resulting temporary difference with its nature - Taxable (DTL) or Deductible (DTA). Switch to the pivot view to break totals down by tax pool, company or fixed asset account, and export straight to Excel.

Book-to-Tax Reconciliation list view

Three assets, three outcomes: two taxable differences and one deductible - totalled at the bottom of every column

Book-to-Tax Reconciliation pivot view grouped by tax pool

Pivot view grouped by Tax Depreciation Pool - the Manufacturing Equipment Pool's $71,901.93 taxable total stands out from the ungrouped assets

Step 3 - Group Assets Into a Tax Pool (Optional)

Create a Tax Depreciation Pool to group assets that share a tax treatment - a machinery class, a vehicle fleet, a leasehold class. The pool form rolls up total original value, book value, tax base and temporary difference across every assigned asset, with a smart button straight to the underlying records.

Tax Depreciation Pool form with rolled-up totals

Manufacturing Equipment Pool - $245,000 in cost across 2 assets, rolled up to a single $71,901.93 taxable difference

Step 4 - Compute Deferred Tax

From the Assets list, select the tax-enabled assets you want to provision for and choose Actions -> Compute Deferred Tax. Set the statutory tax rate and the three accounts to use (Deferred Tax Liability, Deferred Tax Asset, Deferred Tax Expense/Benefit) - the wizard previews every asset's temporary difference, its nature, and the resulting deferred tax amount, plus the net taxable/deductible totals at the bottom.

Compute Deferred Tax wizard with per-asset preview and totals

At a 25% rate: $17,975.48 deferred tax liability, $516.67 deferred tax asset - net $17,458.81 deferred tax expense

Step 5 - Review the Draft Entry Before It Ever Posts

Clicking Generate Draft Entry creates a fully balanced journal entry in Draft state - never posted automatically. Your accountant opens it like any other journal entry, checks the split between the liability, asset and expense/benefit lines, and posts it only when satisfied.

Draft deferred tax journal entry, balanced and unposted

$17,975.48 debit = $17,975.48 credit - balanced, in Draft state, one click away from Post

Perfect For

  IAS 12 / ASC 740 Provisioning

Tax accountants and controllers preparing deferred tax provisions get every asset's temporary difference in one report instead of a side spreadsheet.

  Multi-Company Groups

Each asset follows its own company and currency, so a holding structure can consolidate book-to-tax differences across every entity from one report.

  Accelerated Tax Depreciation Regimes

Jurisdictions allowing declining-balance or bonus/half-year-convention tax depreciation on assets book-depreciated straight-line - a classic taxable-difference scenario.

  Year-End Close

Run the Deferred Tax wizard once at period end, review the draft entry, and post - instead of reconstructing DTA/DTL from scratch every close.

  Audit-Ready Documentation

Auditors can trace every temporary difference back to its asset, its tax method, and its schedule - all inside the same Odoo record, not a disconnected file.

  Asset Classes & Machinery Pools

Group a vehicle fleet or an equipment class into a Tax Depreciation Pool and report on it as a single line instead of dozens of individual assets.

Business Benefits

Zero General Ledger Risk

Tax depreciation lines are stored on the asset only and never linked to a journal entry - there is no way for the tax schedule to accidentally affect the books.

Accountant-Controlled Posting

The Deferred Tax wizard only ever produces a draft entry. Nothing posts automatically - your accountant always has the final review.

Faster Period-End Close

Replace an external deferred tax spreadsheet with a live report and a one-click wizard - less manual re-derivation, fewer transcription errors.

One Source of Truth

Book and tax profiles live on the same asset record, so there is never a question of which spreadsheet is up to date.

Quick Configuration Guide

1 - Turn On Tax Depreciation for an Asset

Accounting -> Assets and Revenues -> Assets -> open (or create) an asset -> Tax Depreciation tab -> enable Compute Tax Depreciation -> set the tax method, duration, period, rate and salvage value -> click Compute Tax Depreciation.

2 - Review the Reconciliation

Accounting -> Assets and Revenues -> Book-to-Tax Reconciliation -> review cost, accumulated book/tax depreciation, net book value, tax base and temporary difference for every tax-enabled asset, in list or pivot view.

3 - Compute and Post Deferred Tax

On the Assets list, select the relevant assets -> Actions -> Compute Deferred Tax -> set the tax rate, journal and the three accounts (Deferred Tax Liability, Deferred Tax Asset, Deferred Tax Expense/Benefit) -> Generate Draft Entry -> review and post from Accounting as usual.

Notes
  • Changing any tax profile field clears the previously computed board so it can never go stale
  • The Manual method lets you type the tax schedule by hand for jurisdictions with fixed statutory tables
  • Tax Depreciation Pools are entirely optional - assign them from the asset's Tax Depreciation tab
  • The Deferred Tax wizard is also reachable directly from an individual asset's list selection
  • Nothing this module computes is ever posted automatically - every journal entry starts in Draft
