BoM Alternative Materials
Define alternative components in Bill of Materials and substitute them during manufacturing or kit delivery. Reduce production delays caused by material shortages with approved component substitutions.
Why This Module?
Material shortages are one of the most common causes of production delays in manufacturing. When a critical component is out of stock, production stops â unless you have approved alternatives ready to use.
This module extends Odoo Manufacturing (MRP) by allowing you to define alternative components directly on Bill of Materials (BoM) lines. When the primary component is unavailable, production managers can replace it with an approved alternative material during manufacturing orders or kit deliveries â without creating multiple BoMs or manually editing stock moves.
Each alternative component can have its own substitution ratio (e.g., 2 units of Alternative A replace 1 unit of Original Component), and the system automatically calculates quantities, creates new moves, and maintains full traceability of what was replaced with what.

1. Define Alternative Components on BoM Lines
Open any Bill of Materials and navigate to the Components tab. Each component line now displays an "Alternative Component" field and an edit button to manage substitutes for that specific component.
2. Alternative BOM Material Wizard
Click the edit button to open the Alternative BOM Material Wizard. Here you can add multiple alternative products with their own quantities and units of measure. Each alternative can have a different substitution ratio.
3. Alternative Component Display on BoM
After saving alternatives, the BoM line shows a summary of available substitutes directly in the component list, making it easy to see which components have alternatives without opening each line.
4. Change Component Button on Manufacturing Order
On any confirmed Manufacturing Order, components that have alternatives display a "Change Component" button (exchange icon). Click it to open the substitution wizard for that specific component.
5. Change Component Wizard on Manufacturing Order
The Change Component Wizard shows the original component information, available alternatives, and allows you to specify how many units of the original component to replace with the selected alternative. Quantities are automatically calculated based on the substitution ratio.
6. Change Component Button on Delivery Order (Kit Products)
For kit products being delivered from Sales Orders, the same "Change Component" button appears on component lines in the Delivery Order, allowing warehouse staff to substitute components during the packing process.
7. Change Component Wizard on Delivery Order
The Change Component Wizard on Delivery Orders works identically to Manufacturing Orders. Select the alternative product, specify the quantity to replace, and the system creates a new move for the alternative while reducing the original component demand.
8. Alternative Moves Created Successfully
After confirmation, the system creates new stock moves for the alternative components. The original component demand is reduced by the replaced quantity, and the new alternative moves are marked with the substitution ratio for proper kit quantity calculations.
