Cancel & Reset Manufacturing Order to Draft

Cancel & Reset Manufacturing Order to Draft
Undo a completed Manufacturing Order in one click - reverse the stock and accounting impact, and start over. No Unbuild workaround, no separate reversal record.
Standard Odoo Manufacturing has no way back once an order is marked Done. A wrong quantity, the wrong Bill of Materials, or a Produce click by mistake means the on-hand quantities, the consumed components and the accounting journal entries are all locked in.
- The only official fix is Unbuild, which leaves the original order untouched and creates a separate reversal record instead of fixing the mistake in place
- Consumed component quantities and produced finished-good quantities stay locked into stock even though the order was wrong
- The accounting journal entries generated by automated inventory valuation remain posted, overstating or understating the books
- Work orders and produced quantities on the Done order cannot be edited or replanned
- Training and sandbox databases accumulate irreversible Done orders that can only be cleaned up by dropping the database
This module adds a real Cancel and Reset to Draft workflow to Done manufacturing orders. Clicking Cancel reverses the produced/consumed on-hand quantities, deletes the related stock moves, and removes the accounting journal entries generated by automated inventory valuation. Clicking Reset to Draft then clears the work orders so the order becomes an editable Draft again - ready to be corrected and confirmed from scratch, on the same order, with no separate reversal record left behind.
- Cancel button - appears on manufacturing orders in the Done state, right next to the standard Unbuild button
- Reset to Draft button - appears once the order is Cancelled, clearing work orders and produced quantities
- Full quantity reversal - both consumed component quantities and produced finished-good quantities are reversed on the stock quants, not just marked cancelled
- Stock move cleanup - the Done stock moves and their move lines are deleted so the order's inventory history is genuinely undone
- Accounting cleanup - journal entries created by automated inventory valuation for this order are deleted along with the moves
- Same order, no duplicate - unlike Unbuild, the original manufacturing order itself becomes editable again; no separate reversal record
- Full audit trail - every Cancel and Reset to Draft action is logged on the manufacturing order chatter
- Manager-restricted - both buttons are only visible to users in the Manufacturing Manager security group
- Confirmation dialogs - both destructive actions ask for explicit confirmation before running
- Locked-period safe - journal entries protected by a restrictive audit trail or a locked accounting period are left untouched and reported on the chatter instead of being silently skipped
Mistake Found
A Done manufacturing order has the wrong quantity, BoM, or was produced by mistake
Click Cancel
Produced/consumed quantities are reversed; stock moves and journal entries are deleted
Order is Cancelled
Stock is back to where it was before production; a Reset to Draft button appears
Click Reset to Draft
Work orders are cleared and the manufacturing order becomes fully editable again
Fix & Reconfirm
Correct the product, quantity, BoM or components, then confirm and produce again as usual
Step 1 - Open a Done Manufacturing Order
Open any manufacturing order that has reached the Done state. Standard Odoo only offers Unbuild here - this module adds a real Cancel button right next to it, restricted to the Manufacturing Manager group.
WH/MO/00002 in the Done state - the Oak Plank component shows 12.00 Consumed
Step 2 - Click Cancel
Clicking Cancel asks for explicit confirmation before it reverses the produced/consumed quantities and deletes the related stock moves and journal entries. Nothing runs until you confirm.
Confirmation dialog explaining exactly what Cancel is about to do
Step 3 - The Order Becomes Cancelled
The component lines are gone - their stock moves were deleted, not just marked cancelled - and a new Reset to Draft button has appeared. The chatter logs exactly what happened and when.
WH/MO/00002 now Cancelled - chatter shows Done → Cancelled, Reset to Draft is available
Step 4 - Click Reset to Draft
Reset to Draft also asks for confirmation before permanently clearing the work orders and stock moves of the cancelled order and bringing it back to an editable state.
Confirmation dialog before the order is reset to Draft
Step 5 - Back to an Editable Draft
The order is fully editable again: the component line is re-planned and reserved (Available), and the product, quantity, BoM or components can all be corrected before confirming and producing again - on the very same order.
WH/MO/00002 back in Draft - ready to be corrected and reconfirmed
Step 6 - Verify the Stock Impact Was Truly Reversed
The reversal is real, not cosmetic. The Oak Plank component in this example was consumed down to 88 units on hand while the order was Done - after Cancel, its stock is back to the full 100 units, exactly as if the order had never been produced.
Oak Plank component - 100.00 On Hand, fully restored after Cancel
Every stage of the cycle above, captured end to end - from a Done order, through Cancel and Reset to Draft, to a fresh editable Draft with its stock fully restored.
Done manufacturing order - the new Cancel button appears next to Unbuild
Cancel confirmation dialog - explains exactly what will be reversed
Cancelled state - component lines removed, Reset to Draft now available
Reset to Draft confirmation dialog
Back to Draft - fully editable and ready to be reconfirmed
Proof: component stock restored from 88 back to the full 100 units on hand
Wrong Quantity Produced
An operator marks 30 units done instead of 3. Cancel reverses the mistaken quantities on both components and finished goods, then Reset to Draft lets you re-enter the correct number.
Wrong Bill of Materials Used
Production ran against an outdated or incorrect BoM. Cancel and Reset to Draft return the order to a clean state so the right BoM can be selected before re-confirming.
Accidental "Mark as Done" Click
A production order was closed before it was actually finished. Undo the mistake on the same record instead of leaving a phantom Done order behind.
Quality Rejections After Production
Finished goods failed quality control right after being marked Done. Cancel the order to reverse the stock impact cleanly instead of manually adjusting quants and journal entries by hand.
Training & Sandbox Environments
Trainees and testers can freely produce, cancel, and reset manufacturing orders to practice the full workflow repeatedly on the same records instead of piling up throwaway Done orders.
Manufacturing Data Corrections
Manufacturing Managers who need to fix historical production errors get a controlled, logged, permission-gated way to undo and redo an order without touching the database directly.
Operational Flexibility
Fix a mistake on the manufacturing order itself instead of routing every correction through Unbuild and a separate reversal record. Less clutter, fewer records to reconcile.
Data Integrity
On-hand quantities, stock moves and accounting journal entries are genuinely reversed, not just hidden or marked cancelled - inventory and the books stay accurate.
Faster Error Recovery
Two clicks and two confirmations take a mistaken Done order all the way back to an editable Draft, instead of a multi-step manual cleanup across inventory and accounting.
Audit-Safe Corrections
Restricted to Manufacturing Managers, gated behind confirmation dialogs, and fully logged on the chatter - every correction is traceable to who did it and when.
1 - Install the Module
No configuration screens needed. Install the module and the Cancel / Reset to Draft buttons appear automatically for users in the Manufacturing -> Administration -> Manufacturing Manager group.
2 - Cancel a Done Order
Manufacturing -> Operations -> Manufacturing Orders -> open an order in the Done state -> click Cancel -> confirm. Quantities are reversed, stock moves and journal entries are removed, and the order becomes Cancelled.
3 - Reset to Draft and Reconfirm
On the Cancelled order, click Reset to Draft -> confirm. Fix the product, quantity, Bill of Material or components, then click Confirm and produce again as usual.
- Both actions are restricted to the Manufacturing Manager security group
- Both actions ask for explicit confirmation before running - nothing happens accidentally
- Cancel is only available on orders in the Done state; Reset to Draft only on Cancelled orders
- Journal entries protected by a locked accounting period or a restrictive audit trail are left untouched and reported on the chatter instead of being silently skipped
- Every action is logged on the manufacturing order chatter for full traceability
