Menu Hide Manager
Menu Hide Manager allows Odoo administrators to hide specific menu items from the navigation and the global menu search for particular users or groups. This is a pure UI/UX customization feature designed to simplify the user interface while keeping standard security rules intact.
Demo: Configuring menu visibility with Hide Profiles
This module ONLY hides menus from the user interface. It does NOT prevent access via direct URL, API, or any other means. For actual security restrictions, you must use Odoo's standard access rights, groups, and record rules.
Key Features
- ✓ Hide by User: Select specific users who should not see a menu
- ✓ Hide by Group: Hide menus from entire user groups
- ✓ Preview Mode: See exactly which menus will be hidden for any user
- ✓ Configuration Profiles: Apply one role configuration across many menus
- ✓ Company Scope: Define global or company-specific hide rules
- ✓ Bulk Add Menus: Add many menus to a profile in one step
- ✓ Menu Search Compatible: Hidden menus don't appear in global search
- ✓ Performance Optimized: Cached queries for fast menu loading
- ✓ Upgrade Safe: Uses stable Odoo hooks, minimal view overrides
- ✓ Bypass List: Exempt specific users or groups from all menu hiding
- ✓ Multi-Language Support: Translations included for English, Spanish, and French
- ✓ Clean Uninstall: Removes all settings without orphan data
Why Choose Menu Hide Manager
- ✓ Cleaner UI for every role: Keep Sales, Accounting, Inventory, and HR users focused on what they actually use
- ✓ Search-safe hiding: Even if users use the menu search/command palette, hidden menus will not appear
- ✓ Zero security side effects: It never changes access rights or record rules
- ✓ Works with all modules: Hides menus from any installed app without modifying core views
Configuration Steps
Go to Apps, search for "Menu Hide Manager", and click Install.
Open the
Menu Hide Manager app from the main app switcher.
You'll land on the Hide Profiles view.
Create a new profile, add the users and/or groups you want to hide menus from, then add the menus to hide (manually or using
Bulk Add Menus).
Click
Apply Changes to apply the hide rules for the listed menus
within the selected company scope.
Use
Preview as User to verify which menus will be hidden for any user.
Users in the bypass list will show no hidden menus.
Use
Configuration to add users or groups to the bypass list.
Bypass users will never have menus hidden, regardless of any hide rules.
Access Rights
Only users with the Menu Visibility Administrator group (automatically assigned to Settings administrators) can:
- Access the Menu Visibility configuration
- Create and manage Hide Profiles
- Use the Preview as User wizard
Multi-Company Support
Menu rules can be global or company-specific. If you select a company on a rule or profile, those hides apply only when that company is active. Leave Company empty to make the hide global across all companies.
FAQ
Q: Will hiding a menu prevent users from accessing the feature?
A: No. This module only hides the menu from the UI. Users can still access features via direct URL, API, or other means if they have the necessary access rights.
Q: What happens when I hide a parent menu?
A: If a parent menu is hidden, all its children are also hidden for that user. If children are hidden but the parent has its own action or other visible children, the parent remains visible.
Q: Does this affect menu search (command palette)?
A: Yes. Hidden menus will not appear in the global menu search for affected users.
Q: How do Hide Profiles work?
A: A profile stores a list of menus plus a global set of users and groups. When you apply the profile, those users and groups replace existing hides for every menu in the profile (within the selected company scope).
Q: How does company scoping work?
A: Rules can be global (no company) or company-specific. When a company is selected in a rule or profile, the hide applies only when that company is active.
Q: What is the Bypass List?
A: The bypass list (configured in Configuration) contains users and groups
that are exempt from all menu hiding. If a user is in the bypass list directly or belongs
to a bypass group, no menus will be hidden for them regardless of any hide profiles or rules.
Best Practices
- Use groups for role-based hides; use users only for exceptions.
- Set company scope only when you need different menus per company.
- Keep profile menu lists focused on what you want to hide.
- Preview with the wizard before rolling out to users.
- After changes, refresh the browser to reload the menu tree.
