Manufacturing Process Costing
Add full cost visibility to every Bill of Materials - material, labor and overhead - with automatic totals, a clear cost breakdown, and direct account mapping. Know your true production cost before you manufacture.
Odoo's standard Bill of Materials tells you what to produce and which components to use. It does not tell you how much that production actually costs. Without labor, overhead, and material costs in one place, pricing decisions rest on guesswork.
- No visibility into the unit cost of each component at the BoM level
- Labor expenses - wages, shift costs, skilled time - are tracked nowhere on the BoM
- Overhead costs - rent, utilities, depreciation, insurance - are invisible to production planners
- Product pricing decisions are made without a true cost base
- Accounting entries for materials, labor and overhead use different accounts with no central reference
- Manufacturers cannot quickly answer: what does it cost to make this product?
Manufacturing Process Costing adds four dedicated tabs to every Bill of Materials. The Total Material Cost tab shows each component's unit price and line total, auto-computed from standard cost. The Labor Cost and Overhead Cost tabs hold editable cost lines with planned hours and cost per hour - totals calculate automatically. The Overall Total Costs tab combines all three into a single cost breakdown and links your Material, Labor and Overhead accounts for clean accounting.
- Component-Level Cost Visibility - see the standard price of every BoM component and the auto-computed line cost (price à quantity) in a dedicated tab
- UoM-Aware Product Cost - component costs are automatically converted from the product's base unit of measure to the BoM line UoM, so quantities in grams, liters or pieces are always correct
- Total Material Cost Summary - the sum of all line material costs is computed and displayed at the bottom of the material cost tab and on the summary tab
- Labor Cost Lines - add named labor entries (Production Labour, Quality Control, Packing â¦) with planned hours and cost per hour; total labor cost updates automatically
- Overhead Cost Lines - capture all factory overhead (rent, utilities, equipment depreciation, insurance, pest control â¦) with hours and rate; total overhead cost computed per BoM
- Overall Total Cost Dashboard - a single Cost Breakdown panel shows Material + Labor + Overhead and the combined Overall Total Cost, giving instant product-cost visibility
- Account Mapping - map a Material Account, Labor Account and Overhead Account directly on the BoM for accurate journal entries during production
- Live Recalculation - all totals recompute the moment a cost or quantity is changed - no manual refresh, no stale numbers
- Company Currency Support - all cost fields respect the company's configured currency for multi-currency environments
- Standard Odoo Integration - depends only on
mrpandaccount; no third-party dependencies, installs cleanly on Odoo 18 and 19 - Extends Existing BoMs - all new tabs appear on your current Bills of Materials with zero data migration; existing BoM data is untouched
- Role-Based Access - cost data is accessible to Manufacturing Users; account fields respect the standard Accounting access group
Step 1 - Open Bills of Materials
Navigate to Manufacturing -> Products -> Bills of Materials. All existing BoMs are listed. Open any BoM - new costing tabs are immediately available without any additional configuration.
Step 2 - View Component Costs on the Total Material Cost Tab
Click the Total Material Cost tab on any BoM. Each component line shows its Product Cost (standard price converted to the line UoM) and its Line Material Cost (cost à quantity) - both fully automatic. The Total Material Cost footer sums all lines. No manual entry needed - costs are read directly from your product catalog.
Step 3 - Add Labor Cost Lines
Click the Labor Cost tab. Add as many labor lines as your process requires - production operators, quality control, packing, supervisors. Enter the Name, Planned Hours and Cost per Hour. The Total Labor Cost per line and the tab-level total are computed instantly.
Step 4 - Add Overhead Cost Lines
Click the Overhead Cost tab. Capture every factory overhead expense: rent, electricity, water, equipment maintenance, depreciation, insurance, cleaning, licensing. Each line follows the same Name / Planned Hours / Cost per Hour structure. Total Overhead Cost rolls up all lines automatically.
Step 5 - Review the Full Cost Breakdown and Map Accounts
Click the Overall Total Costs tab to see the complete picture in one place. The Cost Breakdown section shows Total Material Cost (Products), Total Labor Cost (Manpower), Total Overhead Cost (Expenses) and the combined Overall Total Cost. In the Accounts section, assign your chart-of-accounts entries for Material, Labor and Overhead to drive accurate production journal entries.
To connect BoM costing to your financial records, create three dedicated expense accounts in your Chart of Accounts - one each for Material, Labor and Overhead costs. Assign them on the BoM's Overall Total Costs tab. These accounts then appear across Odoo's accounting reports - the General Ledger, Trial Balance, and Journal Entries - whenever manufacturing-related journal entries are posted against them.
A - Create the Manufacturing Cost Accounts in Chart of Accounts
Go to Accounting -> Configuration -> Chart of Accounts. Create three new Expenses-type accounts: 5010 Manufacturing Material Cost, 5020 Manufacturing Labor Cost, and 5030 Manufacturing Overhead Cost. These accounts will receive debit entries when production costs are recorded.
B - Assign Accounts on the BoM Overall Total Costs Tab
Open any Bill of Materials -> Overall Total Costs tab -> Accounts section. Select your newly created accounts: Material Account = 5010, Labor Account = 5020, Overhead Account = 5030. The cost breakdown totals are visible right above - Material 278.00, Labor 100.00, Overhead 200.00, Overall Total 578.00 - ready to drive journal entries.
C - General Ledger Report
Navigate to Accounting -> Reporting -> General Ledger and search Manufacturing. Each of the three cost accounts appears as its own row - 5010 with 278.00 â¬, 5020 with 100.00 â¬, 5030 with 200.00 ⬠- all posted in July 2026, each with a running balance. Expand any row to see the individual journal entry line.
D - Trial Balance Report
Navigate to Accounting -> Reporting -> Trial Balance. The manufacturing cost accounts (group 5 Financial Accounts) show 578.00 debit movement in the period with zero initial balance - the WIP offset (group 3 Inventories Accounts) shows 578.00 credit, confirming the entries are balanced. Total debit = total credit = 578.00.
E - Journal Entries List
Navigate to Accounting -> Accounting -> Journal Entries. The three manufacturing cost entries appear as posted moves - MISC/2026/07/0001 (Material 278 â¬), MISC/2026/07/0002 (Labour 100 â¬), MISC/2026/07/0003 (Overhead 200 â¬) - all dated 01/07/2026, all with Posted status, total 578 â¬.
F - Journal Items (Move Lines)
Navigate to Accounting -> Accounting -> Journal Items and filter by Manufacturing. Each cost account line is visible with its Journal Entry number, Account name, descriptive Label and Debit amount - 5010 Material consumption 278 â¬, 5020 Production labour 100 â¬, 5030 Factory overhead 200 ⬠- total 578 â¬.
Food & Beverage Manufacturing
Track the per-gram cost of every ingredient alongside labour and utilities. Know the true cost of each SKU before setting shelf prices or planning production runs.
Discrete & Process Manufacturing
Add machine-hour overhead and assembly labor to complex multi-level BoMs. Get a single Overall Total Cost figure that includes every expense category, not just raw materials.
Product Pricing & Margin Analysis
Compare Overall Total Cost against your sale price directly. Use the cost breakdown to identify which expense category is squeezing margin and where to focus cost-reduction efforts.
Cost Accounting & Audit
Map material, labor and overhead accounts directly on the BoM. Finance teams get a clear link between production plans and chart-of-account entries for cleaner period-end reporting.
Budgeting & Cost Planning
Use planned-hours fields on labor and overhead lines to model scenarios - what if labor rates rise, or a new overhead item is added? The BoM cost updates immediately for instant what-if analysis.
Multi-Warehouse & Multi-Company
Each BoM carries its own cost structure. Operations in different facilities with different overhead rates maintain independent cost profiles on the same product.
Accurate Product Costing
Material, labor and overhead are captured in one record. The Overall Total Cost gives a complete production cost figure that can be directly compared against sale price to calculate true margin.
Informed Pricing Decisions
Pricing based on a complete cost breakdown - not guesswork or spreadsheets maintained outside Odoo. When raw material or labor costs change, the BoM cost updates immediately.
Tighter Accounting Integration
Account fields on the BoM provide a direct link between manufacturing plans and the chart of accounts. Finance teams no longer need to cross-reference spreadsheets to allocate production costs.
Zero Migration, Instant Value
Install the module and the costing tabs appear immediately on every existing BoM. No data migration, no reconfiguration of existing records, no downtime. Start adding cost data right away.
1 - Install and Open a Bill of Materials
Install Manufacturing Process Costing from the Apps menu. Navigate to Manufacturing -> Products -> Bills of Materials and open any existing BoM. Four new tabs - Total Material Cost, Labor Cost, Overhead Cost and Overall Total Costs - are immediately visible.
2 - Review Material Costs (automatic)
Click Total Material Cost. The Product Cost and Line Material Cost columns are computed automatically from each component's standard price. No input required - update product costs in the product catalog and the BoM reflects the change immediately.
3 - Add Labor Cost Lines
Click Labor Cost -> Add a line. Enter the labor category name, planned hours and cost per hour. Repeat for each labor category involved in producing this BoM. Total Labor Cost updates after each entry.
4 - Add Overhead Cost Lines
Click Overhead Cost -> Add a line. Enter each overhead item (factory rent, electricity, machine depreciation, etc.) with its hours and rate. Total Overhead Cost updates automatically.
5 - Map Accounting Accounts (optional)
Click Overall Total Costs. In the Accounts section, select the relevant Material Account, Labor Account and Overhead Account from your chart of accounts. Save the BoM.
- Material costs recalculate automatically when a product's standard price changes
- Labor and Overhead lines are per-BoM; each BoM holds its own independent cost profile
- The Overall Total Cost = Total Material + Total Labor + Total Overhead, always live
- Account fields are optional; all other cost features work without an accounting module configuration
- Compatible with Odoo 18 and Odoo 19
