Sorting Selection Type Fields in Odoo List View by Defined Order | Odoo List View: How to Sort Selection Fields by Sequence Instead of Alphabetically

Control List View Sorting of Selection Fields in Odoo Using Sequences Given on Field Level | Override Default Sorting of Selection Fields in Odoo List Views

This module enhances the default list view sorting behavior in Odoo when using selection fields (fields with predefined options like status, state, stage, etc.). This customization ensures that records are sorted according to the defined logical order of selection options, providing a more intuitive user experience. It works globally for all selection fields in Odoo list views, and is not limited to any specific model or class.

Main Features:

  • Logical Sorting for Selection Fields:
    • Automatically sorts records based on the order defined in selection fields, rather than alphabetical order.
  • Workflow Aligned Record Display:
    • Supports business logic by showing records in a meaningful progression (e.g., Draft, Confirmed, Done).
  • Applies in List Views Automatically:
    • No need for additional configuration. Works when sorting any list view by a selection field.
  • Ascending and Descending Support:
    • Correctly handles both ascending and descending sorts based on selection order.
  • Non Selection Fields Remain Unaffected:
    • Only selection fields are impacted. All other fields (e.g., date, name, amount) retain Odoos default sorting behavior.
  • Improved Usability for Status Based Views:
    • Makes it easier for users to visually scan and understand status driven processes, such as sales stages or project phases.
  • For more details, please refer to the screenshots and demo video provided below.

Workflow:

  • Install the Module:
    • Add the module to your Odoo instance and install it no further setup required.
  • Go to a List View:
    • Open any list view that contains a selection field (e.g., state, status, stage_id).
  • Click to Sort the Column:
    • Sort by the selection field by clicking the column header.
  • See Logical Order in Action:
    • Records will appear in the order defined in the selection field, instead of alphabetical order.
  • Use as Usual:
    • All other Odoo features continue to work normally this enhancement is seamlessly integrated.
