Order Line Insert| Sales Order Line Inser| Purchase Order Line Insert| Invoice Order Line Insert

Insert products, sections and notes at any position in Sale Orders, Purchase Orders and Invoices - above or below any existing line, with a single click.

Problem: Odoo Only Lets You Add Lines at the Bottom

In standard Odoo, clicking "Add a product" always appends the new line at the bottom of the list. There is no built-in way to insert a line, section, or note between two existing rows. If you need to reorganise a quotation, purchase order, or invoice, you are forced to:

  • Add the new line at the bottom and then manually drag it to the right position - tedious on long orders
  • Delete and re-enter lines just to change their order - wasteful and error-prone
  • Accept a disorganised order layout that doesn't match the customer's requirements or internal grouping
  • Struggle even more when mixing products, sections and notes - sections can only be dragged, not inserted precisely
  • Waste time on routine quotation editing that should take seconds but takes minutes

Solution: Four Insert Buttons on Every Line - Insert Anywhere in One Click

This module adds a compact set of four action buttons to every line in your order lists. Each button inserts a new row in the exact position you need - no dragging, no scrolling, no re-entry of data.

Insert product above - adds a blank product line immediately above the current row
Insert product below - adds a blank product line immediately below the current row
Insert section above - adds a section header above the current row for grouping
Insert note above - adds a free-text note row above the current row

Works on Sale Orders & Quotations, Purchase Orders & RFQs, and Customer Invoices & Vendor Bills - three models, one module, zero configuration needed.

Before vs After - Editing a Quotation

BEFORE (vanilla Odoo)

1 You have a quotation with 10 product lines already entered
2 Customer asks to add a section header between line 3 and line 4
3 You click "Add a product" -> section appears at the bottom
4 You start dragging the section up through 7 rows
5 The row slips; you overshoot; you repeat the drag
A 5-second task just took 2 minutes of frustrating drag-and-drop.

AFTER (with this module)

1 You have a quotation with 10 product lines already entered
2 Customer asks to add a section header between line 3 and line 4
3 You click the (section) button on line 4
4 A section row appears immediately above line 4 - already in edit mode
5 You type the section name and press Tab -> done
Section is perfectly positioned. Total time: 3 seconds.

Key Features
  • Insert Above & Below: Four buttons per line - insert product above, insert product below, insert section above, insert note above
  • Works on Three Models: Sale Orders & Quotations, Purchase Orders & RFQs, Customer Invoices & Vendor Bills - all in one module
  • Precise Positioning: New lines always land exactly where you clicked - above or below the target row, never anywhere else
  • Immediate Edit Mode: The new line opens directly in edit mode so you can start typing the product name or section title without extra clicks
  • Sections & Notes: Insert organisational section headers and free-text note rows, not just product lines - full flexibility for structured quotations
  • No Configuration Required: Works out of the box on all supported models - no settings to adjust, no options to enable per model
  • Odoo 18 & 19 Compatible: Separate releases for Odoo 18 and Odoo 19 - both fully supported and tested
  • Safe & Non-Invasive: Installs cleanly with no changes to your existing data - uninstall at any time without leaving any trace

How It Works - Step by Step
1

Open Any Order, Purchase Order or Invoice

Navigate to Sales -> Orders -> Quotations, Purchase -> Orders -> Purchase Orders, or Accounting -> Customers -> Invoices. Open any existing document or create a new one.

2

See the Four Insert Buttons on Every Line

Each line in the order lines list now has a compact column of four icon buttons: (product above), (product below), (section above), (note above). They appear on every row - products, sections and notes alike.

3

Click the Button for the Position and Type You Need

Click any button on the reference line. The module instantly creates the new row at exactly the position you selected - above or below that line, right where you need it.

4

New Line Appears In-Place - Already in Edit Mode

The new row materialises between the two existing lines - not at the bottom. It is automatically focused in edit mode so you can immediately type the product name, section title or note text.

5

Save the Document - Done

Fill in the line details and save as normal. The order of all lines is maintained automatically - no manual adjustments needed.

Use Cases

Structured Quotations

Build well-organised quotations with sections like "Hardware", "Software", "Services" - insert section headers and notes precisely between product groups without disrupting the lines above or below.

Last-Minute Additions

Customer calls to add an item after the order is half-filled - insert it in the correct commercial position with one click, keeping the logical product grouping intact.

Order Reorganisation

When a customer requests a different line order, insert lines at the new position instead of deleting and re-entering data - saves time and prevents transcription errors.

Purchase Order Management

Add items to an RFQ in the correct supplier category order - group related products together and insert section headings to make the document readable for the supplier.

Invoice Corrections

Add a missed line item to a draft invoice in the right position - without creating a credit note just to reorder lines or scrolling to the bottom to drag back up.

Inline Notes & Annotations

Insert free-text note rows between specific product lines to provide delivery instructions, installation notes or warranty terms - precisely where the customer needs to read them.

Installation

  1. Prerequisites: Odoo 18 or Odoo 19 with the Sales, Purchase and Accounting apps installed
  2. Install: Search for "Order Line Insert" in the Odoo App Store and click Install
  3. Verify: Open any Sale Order - you should see the four small icon buttons at the start of each order line row
  4. Test: Click the button on any line to insert a section above it - the section row should appear immediately in the correct position

Note: Uninstalling the module is completely clean - all your existing orders and data remain exactly as they were.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does inserting a line shift the sequence numbers of all other lines?

No. Existing lines stay exactly where they are. The new line simply slots in between them - the order of everything else is untouched.

Can I still use drag-and-drop to reorder lines after using the insert buttons?

Yes. The insert buttons and drag-and-drop handles are completely independent. You can mix both approaches freely - use the buttons for precise insertion and drag-and-drop for coarse repositioning.

Does this work on confirmed orders or only on draft quotations?

The buttons appear whenever the order line list is editable. In Odoo 18 sale orders, confirmed orders remain editable. For invoices, the buttons are visible on draft invoices (those that can still be modified). Locked or posted documents with read-only line lists will not allow insertion - which is the standard Odoo behaviour.

Does this work with custom models that have order lines?

The module works on Sale Orders, Purchase Orders and Invoices out of the box. Extending it to other document types is possible with additional development - contact us if you need a custom extension.

Will this module affect performance on large orders?

No. The buttons are a visual addition only - they perform no background processing until you actually click one. Opening or scrolling a long order is just as fast as before.

Business Benefits

Faster Order Entry

Eliminate drag-and-drop friction - sales teams can produce well-structured quotations in less time, with fewer errors caused by misplaced drag operations.

Better Document Quality

Well-structured quotations with section headers and inline notes create a professional impression - products grouped logically exactly where they belong.

Works Across Teams

Sales, purchasing and accounting all benefit from the same consistent experience - one module covers all three departments with zero extra configuration.

Zero Risk to Existing Data

Install or uninstall at any time without affecting a single existing order, purchase or invoice - your data is always safe.
