Industry Sectors
Classify Contacts by Industry
Tag every customer with its industry sector (rubro), then filter and group your contacts by sector for sharper segmentation, targeted campaigns, and cleaner reporting.
What We're Solving
----------------
Segment Your Customer Base
Standard Odoo contacts have no native "industry sector" field that you control. This module adds a clean, configurable Sector / Rubro classification so you can split your customers into meaningful groups for CRM targeting, sales analysis, and marketing lists.
Consistent, Clean Data
Instead of free-text notes or tags that drift over time, sectors come from a centralized catalog with a unique-name rule. Every user picks from the same list, so your reports and "Group By" results stay accurate and comparable across the whole company.
Setup & User Manual
Ready in minutes
1. Configure Your Sectors
Build the catalog once, use it everywhere:
- Go to the Sales app.
- Open Configuration » Industry Sectors.
- Add, rename, or archive sectors directly from the editable list.
- 18 common sectors are preloaded as demo data to get you started.
2. Classify & Analyze
How to use it day to day:
Tag any Contact
Open any contact — a company or an individual — and set the Sector / Rubro field. New contacts inherit their parent company's sector automatically, and you can override it any time.
Filter & Group By
In the Contacts list, use the new Sector / Rubro filter or Group By option to instantly see how your customers break down by industry.
Global Ready | Multi-Language Support
This module is fully translated into English and Spanish (en_US, es_ES, es_PE, es_MX), ensuring a professional experience for international organizations.

QA / User Testing Scenarios
Enterprise Validation Plan
Scenario 1: Manage the Sector Catalog
- Go to Sales » Configuration » Industry Sectors.
- Create a new sector, e.g. "Renewable Energy".
- Test: Try to create a second sector with the same name — Odoo must block it with the unique-name message.
- Test: Archive a sector and confirm it disappears from the selectable list.
Scenario 2: Classify & Inherit
- Open a company contact, assign a Sector / Rubro and save.
- Test: Create a new contact under that company — the Sector / Rubro is pre-filled from the company.
- Test: Change the contact's sector to a different one and save — it keeps your override.
- Test: Select several contacts in the list and run Set Industry Sector from parent company — their sector realigns with their company's.
Scenario 3: Filter & Group By
Goal: Confirm segmentation works end to end.
- Open the Contacts list view.
- Apply the Sector / Rubro filter and pick a sector.
- Use Group By » Sector / Rubro and verify contacts are grouped correctly, with an "undefined" group for contacts without a sector.
FAQ & Troubleshooting
Common Resolutions
A contact shows a sector I didn't set?
Reason: New contacts inherit the sector from their parent company on creation.
Fix: Just edit the Sector / Rubro field on the contact — your value overrides the inherited one. To re-sync several contacts with their company, use the Set Industry Sector from parent company mass action.
Who can edit the sector catalog?
Reason: Editing is restricted by access rights.
Info: All internal users can read and assign sectors, but only Contact Managers can create, edit, or archive entries in the catalog.
