Bank Charges & Transaction Fees for Point of Sale

Automatically add a percentage or fixed surcharge per payment method - card fees, terminal charges, or any bank transaction cost - collected and reported cleanly on every order, with zero manual line entry.

Problem: Card & Bank Fees Eat Into Margins Silently

Standard Odoo Point of Sale has no way to pass on the transaction fee a bank or card processor charges per payment - so every card, terminal, or online payment quietly reduces your margin.

  • No built-in way to charge customers a card processing fee per payment method
  • Cashiers must manually calculate and add a surcharge line - slow and error-prone
  • Different payment methods (card, terminal, online) often carry different fee rates
  • Manual surcharges are easy to forget, especially during busy shifts
  • No consistent, auditable record of how much was charged as a fee per order

Solution: Automatic Bank Charges Per Payment Method

This module lets you configure a percentage or fixed bank charge on any Point of Sale payment method. The moment the cashier validates an order paid with a charge-enabled method, a "Bank Charges" line is added automatically and the payment amount is updated to match - no manual calculation, no forgotten fees, fully reflected on the receipt and in the backend order.

Key Features
  • Per-Payment-Method Configuration - enable bank charges independently on any Point of Sale payment method
  • Percentage or Fixed Amount - charge a % of the payment or a flat fee, your choice per method
  • Fully Automatic - the surcharge line and payment amount update the instant the order is validated
  • Visible Before Checkout - the payment method list shows the applicable rate or fixed amount up front
  • Live on the Payment Screen - the calculated charge is shown next to each payment line as it's added
  • Printed on the Receipt - customers see the "Bank Charges" line and total clearly on their ticket
  • Auditable in the Backend - the exact bank charge amount is stored on every payment record for reporting
  • No Double-Charging - re-validating or retrying an order never applies the surcharge twice
  • Refund-Safe - bank charges are never added to refund orders
  • OWL-Powered - built on Odoo 19's native OWL framework; zero core modifications

How It Works - Step by Step

1. Configure the Charge on a Payment Method

Open any Point of Sale payment method and switch on Enable Bank Charges. Choose Percentage and set a rate, exactly like a card processor's fee.

2. Or Set a Fixed Amount Instead

Prefer a flat fee per transaction? Switch Charge Type to Fixed Amount and enter the exact value to add on every payment.

3. Rates Are Visible on the Payment Screen

Every configured payment method shows its charge - percentage or fixed amount - right next to its name, so cashiers and customers know the fee upfront.

4. The Charge Is Calculated Live

Selecting a charge-enabled payment method immediately shows the computed fee next to the payment line - here, 5% of a $70.00 order comes to $3.50.

5. Works the Same for Fixed Fees

A fixed $2.00 charge on a $40.00 order is calculated and shown exactly the same way - no difference in cashier workflow between percentage and fixed methods.

6. Validated, Printed, and Ready to Reconcile

On validation, the "Bank Charges" line is added to the order automatically. The printed receipt shows the original item, the charge, and the correct grand total - here, $70.00 + $3.50 = $73.50.

Use Cases

Card Processing Fees

Pass on the percentage your card processor charges instead of absorbing it into your margin on every sale.

Bank Transfer Charges

Apply a fixed handling fee for bank transfers or settle-due payments that carry a processing cost.

Restaurants & Cafes

Add a small card surcharge at the counter without cashiers doing any mental math on busy shifts.

Retail Stores

Different rates for different terminals or providers - configure once per payment method, forget about it.

Accounting & Reconciliation

Every charge is stored on the payment record itself, ready for reporting against actual processor statements.

Multi-Terminal Shops

Mix charge-enabled methods (card, terminal) with free ones (cash) side by side - each configured independently.

Business Benefits

Protect Your Margin

Recover the processing fee that would otherwise be silently absorbed on every card or bank payment.

Zero Manual Work

No calculator, no extra line to remember - the charge is applied automatically the moment the order validates.

Full Transparency

Customers see the exact bank charge printed on their receipt - no surprises, no disputes.

Clean Accounting Trail

Every charge is stored on the payment record, giving you an auditable history for reconciliation and reporting.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

Step 1 - Open a Payment Method

Go to Point of Sale -> Configuration -> Payment Methods and open the method you want to charge a fee on (e.g. a card terminal).

Step 2 - Enable Bank Charges

Tick Enable Bank Charges, then choose Percentage (%) or Fixed Amount as the Charge Type.

Step 3 - Set the Rate or Amount

For a percentage charge, enter the Bank Charge Rate (%) (e.g. 5 for 5%). For a fixed charge, enter the Bank Charge Fixed Amount instead.

Step 4 - Sell as Usual

Ring up the order and select the charge-enabled payment method on the payment screen as normal - the applicable rate or amount is shown right on the button.

Step 5 - Validate

Click Validate. The "Bank Charges" line and the updated payment amount are added automatically, and the receipt prints with the correct total.

Pro Tip - Mix Charged and Free Methods

Leave Enable Bank Charges off for methods like Cash where you don't want a fee, and on only for the card or terminal methods that actually carry a processing cost. Each method is configured completely independently.
