Project Sub-Projects - Hierarchical Project Management

Organize complex projects into manageable sub-projects with full hierarchical structure. Break down large initiatives into smaller components, maintain parent-child relationships, and track progress across all levels - perfect for construction, software development, event planning, and enterprise project management.



Problem: Flat Project Structures

In standard Odoo, all projects are flat - there is no way to create parent-child relationships between projects.

This creates significant challenges for complex initiatives:

  • No way to break down large projects into smaller, manageable components
  • No hierarchical visibility - cannot see how sub-projects roll up to parent
  • Complex programs (e.g., building construction) cannot be structured properly
  • Software development epics vs stories have no organizational structure
  • Event planning cannot separate logistics, marketing, and operations into sub-projects
  • Reporting across related projects requires manual consolidation
  • Cannot prevent deletion of projects that have dependent sub-projects


Solution: Hierarchical Project Structure

This module adds a Parent Project field to projects, enabling full hierarchical structures. Enable "Sub-Projects" on any project to allow it to contain child projects. Smart buttons show sub-project counts, dedicated tabs display the project tree, and deletion protection prevents accidental removal of projects with children or sub-projects with tasks. Global setting toggles the feature on/off across the system.

How It Works

1. Enable Sub-Projects Feature Globally

Go to Settings -> Projects -> Sub-Projects - enable the feature for your organization.

2. Enable "Sub-Projects" on Parent Project

Open a project -> Settings tab -> Check "Sub-Projects" to allow child projects.

3. Create Sub-Projects

Create a new project or edit existing - select a Parent Project from the dropdown.

4. View Sub-Projects - Smart Button & Tab

Parent project shows Sub-Projects count smart button and dedicated tab listing all children.

Filter by Main Projects / Sub-Projects, or group projects by their parent.

Installation & Configuration

  1. Install the Module: Install through Odoo Apps or manually copy to addons path
  2. Dependencies: Requires project module
  3. Restart Server & Update: Restart Odoo and update the app list
  4. Enable Globally: Go to Settings -> Projects -> Sub-Projects -> Enable
  5. Assign Security Group: Add "Use Sub-Projects" group to users who need this feature
  6. Enable on Parent: Open a project -> Settings tab -> Check "Sub-Projects"
  7. Create Sub-Projects: Create new projects with Parent Project field set
Guide: Using Project Sub-Projects

Step 1: Enable Sub-Projects Feature Globally

Go to Settings -> Projects -> Sub-Projects. Enable the setting to activate sub-project functionality across your organization.

Note: The "Use Sub-Projects" security group is automatically added to users with Project User rights. You can adjust this in user access rights if needed.

Step 2: Configure Parent Project to Allow Sub-Projects

Open the project that will serve as your parent. Go to the "Settings" tab. Under "Task Management", check "Sub-Projects". This enables the project to contain child projects.

Step 3: Create Sub-Projects

Create a new project (or edit an existing one). You will see a new field: "Parent Project". Select the parent project from the dropdown.

The dropdown only shows projects that have "Sub-Projects" enabled and are not the current project.

Step 4: View Sub-Projects from Parent

Open the parent project. You will see:

  • Smart Button: Shows the number of sub-projects - click to see all child projects
  • "Sub-Projects" Tab: Dedicated tab listing all child projects with details

Step 5: Filter and Search Projects by Hierarchy

In the Projects list view, use the new filters and grouping options:

  • Sub-Projects: Shows only projects that have a parent
  • Main Projects: Shows only top-level projects (no parent)
  • Group By -> Parent Project: Groups projects under their parent
  • Search by Parent Project: Find all sub-projects of a specific parent

Each sub-project can have its own tasks, team, and timeline while rolling up to the parent.

Deletion Protection Rules

Cannot delete a parent project that has sub-projects - you must delete or reassign sub-projects first.
Cannot delete a sub-project that contains tasks - you must delete or reassign tasks first.
These safeguards prevent accidental data loss and maintain data integrity.
