MRP Subcontracting Work Orders
The Subcontract Work Orders application extends Odoo's manufacturing capabilities by allowing specific operations to be outsourced to external vendors. It automates the creation of related purchase orders and stock transfers for sending raw materials and receiving finished and extra goods. The module features automatic status synchronization, instantly updating the parent work order to a finished state once the incoming vendor receipt is validated. All related procurement and inventory documents are clearly linked via smart buttons on the main record, providing complete traceability from a single interface.
Features
Auto-Generated RFQ & Deliveries
The system automatically creates necessary documents for the subcontracting process. When a subcontract work order starts, it immediately generates a Request for Quotation (PO) for the service and a Delivery order for the raw materials, reducing manual data entry.
Automated Work Order Sync
The application tracks and updates document statuses automatically. Validating the receipt of finished goods advances the Subcontract Work Order to a validated state. This immediately updates the parent Manufacturing Work Order to a "Finished" status, allowing production to continue without manual steps.
Send & Receive Extra Materials
Configure subcontracting details directly on the manufacturing operation. Users can define specific service products, vendor costs, and map additional raw materials to send to the vendor. The setup also allows specifying extra finished items or by-products to receive back.
Integrated Smart-Button Links
Track the entire process from a single interface. The Work Order form uses smart buttons to link the original Manufacturing Order directly to the Subcontract record, Purchase Order, Delivery, and Receipt documents. This provides a complete history and easy navigation across related records.

1.) Subcontracting Configuration
To initiate the custom subcontracting flow, administrators must first enable the feature globally. This is done by checking the "Subcontract Work Orders" option within the main application settings, allowing the creation of subcontract records and related procurement documents.
Navigation : Settings → INKERP → Subcontract Work Orders
2.) Operation Subcontracting Details
When defining a manufacturing operation, users can flag it as a subcontracted step by checking the "Subcontract?" boolean. This action reveals a "Subcontracting Details" tab where managers can configure the supplier, service product, and associated costs, as well as specify any additional components to send to the vendor.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Configuration → Operations
3.) Extra Products Receipt Configuration
Within the operation configuration, a secondary tab is available for "Extra Products To Receive From Vendor". This feature allows production managers to specify any additional finished items, components, or by-products that the subcontractor is expected to return along with the main assembly.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Configuration → Operations
4.) Initiating the Subcontract Order
On a standard Manufacturing Order, the routing automatically identifies operations configured for subcontracting. Instead of the standard start button, a green "Subcontract Order" button is dynamically displayed on the operation line to trigger the creation of a dedicated subcontract record.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Operations → Manufacturing Orders
5.) Accessing the Subcontract Record
Once the subcontract order is successfully generated, the initial creation button dynamically changes to display the unique subcontract reference number along with a "View Subcontract" link. This confirms the dedicated subcontract record is linked to the work order and provides direct access to manage the external workflow.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Operations → Manufacturing Orders
6.) Starting the Subcontract Workflow
The newly created Subcontract Work Order begins in the "Draft" stage, automatically displaying all mapped details including the subcontractor, target product, and service costs. Clicking the "Start" button initiates the actual subcontracting process, which will trigger the generation of the necessary procurement and logistical documents in the background.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Manufacturing Orders → Subcontract
7.) Material Purchase and Delivery Generation
Upon starting the contract, the subcontract record automatically shifts to the "Material Sent" state. Smart buttons dynamically appear at the top of the form, providing direct access to the auto-generated Material Purchase record and the outgoing Delivery order for the required components.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Manufacturing Orders → Subcontract
8.) Confirming the Material Purchase
Accessing the Material Purchase smart button opens the generated Request for Quotation, which details the service charges and the expected finished items. The user must verify the "Deliver To" destination and click "Confirm Order" to officially convert the quotation into an active Purchase Order.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Purchase Order
9.) Generating the Incoming Receipt
Confirming the Purchase Order automatically generates the anticipated incoming shipment for the finished product and any extra received items. A new "Receipt" smart button dynamically appears at the top of the Purchase Order, providing a direct link to the pending stock transfer.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Purchase Order
10.) Validating Subcontractor Delivery
Accessed via the Subcontracting Delivery menu or the Delivery smart button, this outgoing stock transfer lists the raw materials required by the vendor. The warehouse staff clicks "Validate" to formally deduct these components from internal inventory and ship them to the subcontractor's location.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontracting Delivery
11.) Delivery Completion
Once the delivery order is successfully validated, its status shifts to the "Done" state. This confirms that the required raw materials are officially in transit or have been delivered to the subcontractor's location for processing.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontracting Delivery
12.) Subcontract Receipt Visibility
With the purchase order confirmed and the delivery processed, a "Receipt" smart button becomes visible directly on the central Subcontract Work Order form. This centralizes access, allowing users to quickly navigate to the pending incoming shipment of finished goods without leaving the main record.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontract Work Orders
13.) Processing the Incoming Receipt
When the subcontractor returns the finished goods, warehouse staff open the linked incoming receipt. They verify the received quantities of the main assembled product and any configured extra components, then click "Validate" to officially bring the items into inventory.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontracting Receipt
14.) Receipt Completion
After successful validation by the warehouse staff, the incoming receipt order officially moves to the "Done" state. This action updates the on-hand inventory levels for the finished goods and triggers an automated background status update on the linked parent Subcontract Work Order.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontracting Receipt
15.) Finalizing the Subcontract Work Order
Thanks to the automated status update triggered by the completed stock receipt, the Subcontract Work Order automatically advances to the "Receipt Validated" state. The production manager can now click the highlighted "Done" button to formally conclude this specific subcontracted phase of production.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Subcontract → Subcontracting Receipt
16.) Work Order Synchronization
Marking the subcontract record as "Done" automatically synchronizes back to the parent Manufacturing Order, updating the corresponding operation line to a "Finished" status. With the subcontracted work order completed, the primary "Produce All" button becomes active, allowing users to proceed with consuming components and finalizing the overall build.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Operations → Manufacturing Orders
17.) Closing the Manufacturing Order
With all internal operations and subcontracted work orders finished, users can complete the final production process. The main Manufacturing Order advances to the "Done" state, signifying that all components have been consumed and the final assembled product is successfully built and stocked in inventory.
Navigation : Manufacturing → Operations → Manufacturing Orders
18.) End-to-End Traceability
The Work Order form maintains complete historical traceability even after the operation is marked as finished. The interface prominently features smart buttons at the top of the record, providing direct access to the associated Subcontract, Purchase, Delivery, and Receipt documents. The dedicated subcontract reference number is also permanently recorded in the main form, centralizing all related procurement and logistics data into a single, unified view.
