Website Fixed Default Language
Sets the default language for
first-time visitors regardless of their browser’s language.
The Problem:
Odoo’s default behavior for multilingual websites often relies on the browser’s language settings, which can lead to problems:
1. Automatic Language Redirection:
Odoo will automatically display the website in the language that matches the browser’s language setting. For instance, if a user’s browser is set to English, the website will be shown in English, even if the user’s primary language is different.
2. Language Mismatch:
If a user’s browser language doesn’t match any of the website’s supported languages, Odoo defaults to the website’s primary language. For example, if a browser is set to Korean but the website supports only English and French, Odoo will show the website in French.
3. Forced Redirection Even on Specific Links:
Odoo redirects users to a language version that matches their browser, even when a link points to a specific language. For example, a link to domain.com/vi/web-page will be redirected to domain.com/en/web-page if the browser language is set to English and the website supports an English version.
Why This Is a Problem:
1. Browser Language ≠ User Language:
In many countries, people use browsers set to English by default, even if their native language is different. This means that the website will display content in English even though users might prefer another language.
2. Negative Impact on Local SEO:
• Search engine bots may crawl the website using English as the default browser language, leading to the English version being indexed more frequently. This reduces the visibility of localized pages in non-English search results.
• When users click on search results in their native language but land on an English page, they may leave the site quickly, reducing the average session duration. This negatively affects search rankings and overall SEO performance.
What This Module Does:
1. Set Default Language for First-Time Visitors:
The module allows you to choose a default language for first-time visitors, regardless of their browser’s language. After the first visit, users can switch to their preferred language as usual, and the website will remember this preference for future visits.
2. Prevent Unwanted Language Redirects:
Links to specific language versions will remain unchanged, regardless of the visitor’s browser language or website default language. For example, a link to domain.com/vi/web-page will stay in Vietnamese (/vi) and won’t redirect to /en or any other language version, ensuring that the user sees the exact content intended for them.
Benefits:
1. Improved User Experience:
By displaying the website in a consistent language for first-time visitors, you ensure that users are more likely to see content in the language they expect, reducing bounce rates and enhancing engagement.
2. Better Local SEO Performance:
The module helps ensure that search engines index your website’s content in different languages, improving visibility in local search results. Additionally, users who click on search results will land on the correct language page, reducing bounce rates and improving site metrics that influence SEO rankings.
3. Control Over Language Display:
Prevents the website from redirecting users based on browser language, ensuring that specific URLs for different languages remain intact. This is essential for maintaining consistent and accurate user experiences, especially in multilingual countries.
This module is essential for businesses operating in multilingual environments where browser language settings don’t always match user preferences. It helps avoid language mismatch issues, improves user satisfaction, and ensures that the website performs better in local SEO.
How to use
• From your Odoo dashboard, navigate to the website module.
• Go to Website Settings by clicking on the “Website” menu and selecting Configuration → Settings.
2. Select the website you want to apply the setting
In case you have multiple websites, you can set each website independently. One website can have this option enable, others may not.
3. Enable Default Language Override:
• Scroll down to the Website Info section.
• Check the option Ignore Browser Language to activate the feature that will display the
website in the default language, regardless of the visitor’s browser language.
4. Set the Default Language:
• In the Website Settings, select the language you wish to display by default from the Default Language dropdown list.
• The default language you select will be the one shown to first-time visitors.
5. Verify the configuration:
• Once saved, open the website in an incognito window or clear the cache to simulate a first-time visitor experience.
• Ensure that the website displays in the chosen default language regardless of the browser’s language setting.
By completing these steps, your Odoo website will always display in the default language for new visitors, enhancing user experience and ensuring consistent SEO performance across multiple regions.
